Chair sought for Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

Putting Patients First

The NMC is the independent professional regulator for 675,000 nurses and midwives in the UK. We exist to safeguard the health and wellbeing of patients and the public by setting standards for education, maintaining a register of nurses and midwives, and investigating those individuals whose fitness to practise is called into question. We have an annual income of £65m and employ around 600 staff.

After a period of significant change and challenge, we have entered a new phase in our development, and are focused on continuing to improve our performance and strengthening public protection.

We are seeking a new Chair with the ability to develop and lead a high-performing Council. The Chair will work closely with colleagues and partners to ensure that we build an organisation that can tackle the challenges ahead and remain focused on protecting patients.

The Chair’s role is a complex and demanding one, requiring outstanding chairing and leadership skills. You will have a strong track record of operating in complex environments, and will be a clear and effective communicator with the ability to build sustainable strategic relationships. You will be resilient and calm under pressure, able to respond proactively to challenges, and committed to advancing the NMC’s objectives.

Remuneration is £48,000 a year based on an average time commitment of 2 days a week. Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. The new Chair will take office on 1 January 2015.
