The Department for Regional Development is seeking to appoint a Chair to the Board of Belfast Harbour Commissioners.
Belfast Harbour Commissioners is a Public Trust Port established by legislation. The Belfast Harbour Commissioners role is to develop, maintain and operate the Belfast Harbour to the highest standards of efficiency, financial prudence, environmental awareness, safety and security to the benefit of all stakeholders. All financial surpluses generated are reinvested to meet these responsibilities.
The role of Chair will be to bring their judgement to bear on issues of strategy, performance and governance within Belfast Harbour Commissioners. He/she should bring wide experience to the work of the organisation and be prepared to lead in setting the overall strategic direction of the organisation.
No specific academic qualifications are required for the post. Applicants will be assessed from the following criteria:
- Relevant Experience
Legislation requires that successful candidates must have experience of and capacity in one of the following: the management of harbours, shipping, port usage, industrial, commercial or financial matters, administration, the organisation of workers; or have in some other respect special knowledge of experience which would be of value to the Commissioners in the discharge of their functions, or have any other skills and abilities considered from time to time by the Department to be relevant or useful to the Commissioners.

- Interpersonal and Communication Skills

The appointment is effective from 1 January 2015 and will run for a period of four years.
Applicants invited for interview are eligible for reimbursement of reasonable travelling expenses incurred within the UK and Republic of Ireland.
Time Commitment and Remuneration
The time commitment will be approximately 1 day per week, consisting of monthly Board meetings, ad hoc Committee meetings, and representing the Board (this includes occasional evening engagements). The Chair receives remuneration of £30,780 per annum and reasonable travel and subsistence costs.
