Chair, Northern Ireland Water (NIW)

NIW was established on 1 April 2007 as a government owned company with the Department of Regional Development as the sole shareholder. NIW is responsible for the daily delivery of 560 million litres of drinking water to households and businesses in Northern Ireland and annually it collects and treats over 320 million cubic metres of waste water. It has a workforce of 1,300 and in 2012/13 a turnover of £426 million.


The role of Chair will be to bring his or her judgement to bear on issues of strategy, performance and governance within NIW. The Chair should be prepared to lead the Board in setting the overall strategic direction of the organisation, and to direct, support and challenge the executive team to deliver the Board’s strategy and targets.

Skills and Experience

No specific academic qualifications are required for the post. Applicants will be assessed from the following criteria:

  • Leadership
  • Developing and Delivering Strategy.
  • Governance, Control and Accountability.
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills.

All candidates will be expected to have high standards of probity and integrity.

The appointment is effective from 1 April 2015 and will run for a period of four years.

Applicants invited for interview are eligible for reimbursement of reasonable travelling expenses incurred within the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Time Commitment and Remuneration

The time commitment will be approximately 4 business days per month. The Chair will be expected to attend monthly Board meetings and other ad hoc meetings as required. The Chair receives remuneration of approx £40,000 and reasonable travel and subsistence costs will also be paid. There is also provision for additional days to be recommended at £1,000 per day subject to a maximum of 5 additional days.
