Commissioner for Children and Young People for Northern Ireland

This post is a full time appointment for a period of 4 years, with the possibility of one renewal for a further period of 4 years, subject to satisfactory performance.

We are looking for an outstanding individual to make the most of a unique opportunity: to champion the interests of children and young people in Northern Ireland at the highest level, and bring about real improvements to their lives and futures.

We are not seeking someone who will stay hidden in the background, or act on assumptions and received thinking. Instead, you will be a highly visible and informed presence who can make direct contact with diverse groups of children and young people. You will find out what they think about a wide range of issues: from getting a job to staying healthy and safe; from being in care to coming from another country; from education to being treated fairly. You will then work tirelessly to make those views heard in all the right places.

It is a role like no other, so you could come from any of a wide variety of backgrounds. Whatever your experience, you must show an understanding of children’s needs and aspirations, plus the ability to influence others and be effective on the public stage.

Above all, you will bring the personality and commitment to make a real difference to the lives of children and young people and promote their interests to decision makers in the public, private and voluntary sectors.
