Chair, Libraries Northern Ireland

Minister Carál Ní Chuilín is seeking to appoint a new Chair to the Board of Libraries NI.

Expressions of interest are welcome from applicants with an interest in the public library service, including individuals who have not previously held positions in this area.

The Minister said: “Libraries make a significant impact within our communities, particularly those located in areas of deprivation. They provide a wonderful opportunity for individuals to learn, grow and enrich their lives. It is essential therefore for the Libraries NI Board to be led by an individual of the highest calibre. I hope that there is a high level of interest from members of the public from a variety of backgrounds with the required skills and experience.”

Minister Ní Chuilín is encouraging women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities to apply. She said: “Females are currently under represented in this area and I would particularly encourage applications from women. I would also encourage members of ethnic minorities and people with a disability to apply for this position.”

Minister Ní Chuilín also paid tribute to the outgoing Chair of Libraries NI, Mr Nigel Macartney. She said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Macartney for his contribution since formally taking up the post as Chair of Libraries NI in January 2012. He has strongly led Libraries NI through a period of significant change, ensuring the library service meets the needs of its customers, as well as overseeing the targeting of resources at areas of greatest social need. I would like to wish him well in the future.”

The primary duty of the Northern Ireland Library Authority (known as Libraries NI), as set down in the Libraries Act (Northern Ireland) 2008, is to provide a comprehensive and efficient public library service for persons living, working or studying in Northern Ireland.

All applications for appointment are considered strictly on merit. The final decision on appointments will rest with the Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Friday 1 August 2014.
