Appointment of Non-Executive Board Member(s)

The Utility Regulator is responsible for regulating the electricity and gas industries and water and sewerage services in Northern Ireland and protecting the short- and long-term interests of consumers. The Department of Finance and Personnel is seeking to appoint at least one new member to the NIAUR Board with effect from 1 December 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter. The terms of appointment will be for five years and, subject to satisfactory performance, may be extended for a second term. The expected time commitment amounts to approximately twenty days per year. The post(s) carries an annual remuneration of £9,521 and travel and subsistence expenses, which are payable according to the Utility Regulator’s travel and subsistence policy.

The Utility Regulator intends to recommend the appointment of one of its suitably
experienced non-executive directors to the all Ireland Single Electricity Market Committee (SEMC). The extra time commitment for this work amounts to a further 20 days per year, with SEMC meetings held alternatively in Belfast and Dublin.

Should a successful candidate be appointed to this position they will receive additional remuneration and expenses on a pro–rata basis.

Applicants to be Non-Executive Board Members(s) must be able to demonstrate

  • At least 5 years board level experience in a major electricity utility or
    generator – with good knowledge and understanding of electricity markets
    and their regulation;
    Experience of setting the strategic direction for an organisation;
    Experience of delivering results and engaging people; and
    Experience of Corporate Governance and an understanding of the role of a
    non-executive director.
