Referring to the recent public appointments competition which is seeking a new Chair for the Governing Body of South Eastern Regional College, the Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry said: “I am pleased with the level of interest shown to date and would like to thank everyone who has requested information on this opportunity.”
“As the competition remains open, I would continue to encourage people across Northern Ireland with an interest in supporting the development of education and skills in their communities to consider putting themselves forward for appointment.”
The purpose of a college Governing Body is to oversee the efficient and effective management of each college, including financial performance and the quality of teaching, learning and assessment. The Chair has a particular role in providing effective strategic leadership and ensuring that the governing body works well.
Minister Farry said: “The role of a Chair is rightly a challenging one, but it also offers individuals a unique opportunity to play a major role in contributing to the development of the Northern Ireland further education sector.
“We are rightly proud of the rich diversity of our student population and I believe that our Governing Bodies, including the Chair, should seek to reflect this to ensure our colleges understand and respond to the needs and aspirations of the communities they serve.
“I recently launched the new Further Education Strategy for Northern Ireland, ‘Further Education Means Success’. This sets out the future direction of further education in Northern Ireland, providing a huge opportunity to drive positive economic change, promote individual opportunity and achieve greater social cohesion. It aims to deliver an ambitious and prestigious further education system, recognised locally, nationally and internationally for high quality and economically relevant education and training. It will enable further education to be recognised as an equal and valued pillar of the education system in Northern Ireland, alongside higher education and the statutory school system.”
All applications for appointment are treated strictly on merit. The final decision on appointments will rest with the Minister for Employment and Learning.
