The GMC seeks to appoint two lay and one medical member to fill three vacancies on its governing body, the Council. The Council of the GMC sets the organisation’s strategy and defines its high-level policies. It is responsible for the oversight of the GMC and makes sure that the organisation fulfils its statutory and charitable purposes. The Council comprises 12 members (6 lay and 6 medical). Two vacancies are for members who must live or work wholly or mainly in Wales or Scotland; the other vacancy is open to applicants from any of the four UK countries.
Applicants for these roles must be able to contribute to setting strategy, exercising oversight and ensuring effective corporate governance. Additional desirable knowledge and skills are sought for specific areas, including commercial acumen; financial/business management; investment income generation; information systems and communications technology; and the legal sector.

This is an online application, competency based application process.
Registering and Creating an Account
You will need to create an account by clicking the red ‘Create my Account’ button on the right. Choose a username and password. Keep these safe as you will need your account details to access your application and receive messages from us securely.
We will communicate with you throughout the process via notification messages in your account. We will send you emails to alert you to a new message but you will need to login to your account to access it. This is to protect your privacy.
Once you have set up an account, then you can log in at any time using the username and password you have created.
When you have satisfied yourself that you meet the role criteria and eligibility requirements, click on the red ‘Apply Now’ button. On the next screen, you will be asked a number of eligibility questions. If you do not meet the required eligibility, you will not be able to proceed with your application.
Competency Based Online Application
You will then be asked to provide a brief summary of your career history. If you would prefer to upload a CV that already details your career history, you can do so later and you do not need to complete the online career history.
There follows a number of evidence based competency questions, which you are asked to complete online. There is a 300 word limit for each of these questions. You can save your application at any point and return to it later.
The final stage of the online application will ask you to provide two referees. Once complete, you will be asked to make a final submission of your application. Once submitted, you cannot retrieve your application to make any further amends so ensure you are happy that it is fully complete. After you have completed the Equal Opportunities information, you will see a confirmation screen acknowledging your application. You will also receive an email to the email address you provided, confirming receipt of your application.
