Council Members wanted at the General Medical Council

The General Medical Council (GMC) plays a vital role in helping to protect patients and improve the standards of medical practice in the UK. It is responsible for setting the standards for medical students and doctors, for supporting them in achieving and exceeding those standards and for taking action whenever these are not met. It does this by working with doctors, government health departments, employers, medical educators and patient groups to make sure that the trust patients have in their doctors is fully justified.

The GMC seeks to appoint two lay and one medical member to fill three vacancies on its governing body, the Council. The Council of the GMC sets the organisation’s strategy and defines its high-level policies. It is responsible for the oversight of the GMC and makes sure that the organisation fulfils its statutory and charitable purposes. The Council comprises 12 members (6 lay and 6 medical). Two vacancies are for members who must live or work wholly or mainly in Wales or Scotland; the other vacancy is open to applicants from any of the four UK countries.

Applicants for these roles must be able to contribute to setting strategy, exercising oversight and ensuring effective corporate governance. Additional desirable knowledge and skills are sought for specific areas, including commercial acumen; financial/business management; investment income generation; information systems and communications technology; and the legal sector.
