Search begins for new board members for the General Consumer Council

The Department for the Economy (DfE) is seeking to appoint three new members to the Board of the General Consumer Council (the Consumer Council).

The Consumer Council is a public body, independent from government, working to bring about change to benefit Northern Ireland consumers. Its aim is to make the consumer voice heard and make it count. It has specific functions in relation to energy, water, transport, postal services and food. The appointments will commence on 1 April 2018 and the term of office is three years.  

We wish to appeal to people from as wide a range of backgrounds and experiences as possible to help maximise the relevance of the Consumer Council to all of our citizens. We would encourage people of all ages, in particular those with a community or voluntary sector background and those from the rural communities to apply to bring some fresh perspectives on consumer issues.

 We are operating the Guaranteed Interview Scheme for applicants with a disability.

 The time commitment is normally 1 day per month with a remuneration of £106.50 (over 4 hours per day) and £53.26 (under 4 hours per day) plus travel and subsistence. All reasonable receipted dependant carer expenses will also be reimbursed where applicable.

Meetings of the Board are normally held in Belfast, although they may occasionally meet in other venues across Northern Ireland.

No academic qualifications are required for the post. Appointments will be made on merit from those individuals who best satisfy 4 essential  criteriathinking strategically; working in partnership; communication skills plus a choice of 1  from the following -financial understanding; good governance or practical experience of consumer issues and representation.

 The closing date for applications is 5pm on Wednesday 10 January 2018.  Late applications will not be accepted.

 Interviews are scheduled to take place on 20th 27th and 28th February 2018.
