Chairperson – Agri Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI)

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is seeking to appoint a Chair to the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI).  AFBI is a DAERA Executive Non-Departmental Public Body (NDBP) set up under the powers of the Agriculture (NI) Order 2004.  It is empowered under the Order to undertake scientific work (research and development, testing, advice and information on scientific matters and dissemination of the results of scientific research) in the fields of agriculture, animal health and welfare, food, fisheries, forestry, the natural environment and rural development and enterprise.  Further information about the organisation, can be obtained from the AFBI website at

Time Commitment and Remuneration: Chair role requires approximately 40 days per annum. This position is remunerated at £26,510 per annum (currently under review). Reasonable travel and subsistence expenses will also be reimbursed along with reasonable costs relating to care of dependents, including childcare. 

Terms of Appointment:  The successful candidate will be appointed for a 3 year period from 1st April 2019. An additional 2 year term may be offered, subject to satisfactory performance and attendance.

 Application Process: A merit based process will be applied alongside the Guaranteed Interview Scheme for applicants with a disability. Applicants will be expected to complete an application form demonstrating how they meet the essential criteria for appointment. The essential criteria are: Experience in a Field of Activity Relevant to the Discharge of the Functions of the Institute; Strategic Thinking and Direction; Leadership; Influencing and Directing Change; Financial Planning and Management; Corporate Governance and Accountability; and Communication.

A sift of applications will be carried out and short listing criteria applied if necessary. A panel interview will follow. The panel will agree a ranked order of successful candidates for consideration of appointment.
