The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is seeking to appoint a Chair and four Members to the Livestock and Meat Commission for Northern Ireland (LMC), with applications welcome from a wide range of backgrounds.

It was set up under the powers of the Livestock Marketing Commission Act (NI) 1967 for the benefit of the livestock (cattle and sheep) and livestock products industry in Northern Ireland. In particular it undertakes market research, provides up to date market intelligence information, supports the promotion of beef and lamb in domestic and export markets and works closely with DAERA to improve the competitiveness of the sector. The LMC also operates the Farm Quality Assurance Scheme Northern Ireland for cattle and sheep within Northern Ireland.

Time Commitment and Remuneration: The Chair role requires approximately 48 days per annum.  This position is remunerated at £17,315 per annum (under review). Reasonable travel expenses incurred on official business will be reimbursed.

The Member role requires approximately 30 days per annum. This position is remunerated at £6,485.  Reasonable travel expenses incurred on official business will be reimbursed.

Terms of Appointment: All successful candidates are expected to be appointed for a three year period from 7th May 2022.  An additional three year term may be offered subject to satisfactory performance and attendance.

Application Process: A merit based process will be applied alongside the Guaranteed Interview Scheme for applicants with a disability. Applicants will be expected to complete an application form demonstrating how they meet the essential criteria for appointment.

The essential criteria for both positions are: Strategic Planning and Direction Setting; Ability to build networks / alliances / partnerships; and Corporate Governance and Accountability, including Financial Planning and Management.

For the Board Member position only: a minimum of three years’ experience of livestock production and/or livestock processing and/or marketing in the agri-food industry.

For the Chairperson only: Effective Leadership and Ability to manage significant change.
