School Governor Opportunities

The Department of Education (DE) and Education Authority (EA) have launched a new campaign inviting applications for school governors in Controlled and Maintained schools across Northern Ireland.

Becoming a school governor is an excellent opportunity to help children and young people in your local community, meet new people, learn new skills and share experience.

School governors are volunteers from all backgrounds, who use their skills and experience to support schools in providing the best possible education for every pupil. Governors do not need to be educational experts or parents to serve on a Board of Governors.

Governors play a critically important role in the management of a school, alongside school leaders. Governors bring qualities such as enthusiasm, commitment and the ability to work in a team and make a genuine difference to the outcomes of children and young people in their schools.

We would encourage that you support the campaign by sharing this volunteering opportunity with anyone who may be interested in applying.

Anyone aged 18 or over can apply, and volunteers from all sections of the community are welcome to submit an application.

Information on the role of the school governor and how to apply is available on the Department’s website: https://www.education-ni.gov.uk/articles/school-governor- appointments or on EA’s website: https://www.eani.org.uk/school-governance
