SONI Board Member – Finance
SONI (System Operator for Northern Ireland) is responsible for the safe, secure, economic, and reliable operation of the transmission system in Northern Ireland under licence from the Utility Regulator and via a joint venture is responsible for running the all-island Single Electricity Market (SEM).
SONI plays a key role in the delivery of Northern Ireland’s Energy Strategy “Path to Net Zero Energy” and is at the heart of Northern Ireland’s electricity system. Their role in operating the electricity grid extends beyond the present and is growing in importance. As the Transmission System Operator, they also have the vital job of planning for Northern Ireland’s energy future. SONI advise on the future direction of the power system, plan the changes and investments that are required, in both an operational and physical context and deliver on these plans through key projects and initiatives. This will be achieved by partnering with statutory bodies, industry, and society to meet the energy needs of today as well as those in the future.
A new, independent Board was established in October 2023 that is collectively responsible for the performance and long-term success of SONI Ltd. EirGrid plc, SONI Ltd’s parent company now seek to make 2 new appointments to the SONI Ltd. Board: (1) Finance and (2) Infrastructure/ Engineering.
Board Member – Finance
Candidates must demonstrate in their application evidence of experience at an appropriate senior level in the following areas:
- Accounting and/or finance experience in a financially complex commercial organisation (ideally within the energy sector).
- Evidence of substantial and recent experience of working at senior level in, or for, a part of the UK or European Energy Industry.
- Senior executive and/or non-executive board level experience a leadership role in complex organisations of scale, with the capacity to tailor such experience to the challenges of SONI Ltd and the potential to assume responsibilities in a Committee Chair role.
- Excellent commercial acumen, risk awareness and a record of contributing, at Board level, to an organisation that is engaged in transformational change within a sector that is also undergoing significant transformational change itself.
- A passion for addressing the challenge of climate change.
The terms of appointment of each successful candidate will be for no less than three years and no more than six years and will be on a staggered basis to ensure continuity in board composition. The current fee for the role of a Board Member is £20,000 per annum.
