This role of Chair is a remunerated public appointment with a four-year term. The anticipated time commitment associated with the role is three days per week.

Established in 2015, the Education Authority (EA) is the non-department public body responsible for delivering education services across Northern Ireland.

The vast operational scope of the EA touches nearly every aspect of educational life in the region. It serves a population of around 1.9 million people, is responsible for supporting over 1,100 schools and serving a school population of approximately 356,000 pupils to ensure that each child has access to quality education and support services.

With a 2023 – 2024 budget of over £2 billion, the EA is also one of the largest employers in Northern Ireland, with a workforce in excess of 40,000. This includes teachers, school support staff, administrative personnel, youth workers, and those involved in maintenance and transport.

The Department of Education is seeking an exceptional individual to serve as the EA’s next Chair.

As Chair, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of the EA during a time of ongoing transformation, challenge and opportunity. You will lead the Board to make critical decisions that shape the future of education to ensuring that services are user centric, effective, equitable, and innovative. This is a unique opportunity to influence the educational landscape of Northern Ireland, addressing key challenges such as resource allocation, inclusivity, and the integration of technology in learning.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of strategic leadership in a complex operating environment. Experience in effective governance, stakeholder engagement and collaboration and delivering transformational organisational change is also essential.
