esc films is an arts and film-making charity focusing on mental health, criminal justice and social justice issues. We work on creative projects that matter and that make a difference.

  • OUR VISION: A society where disadvantaged people experience radical transformation.
  • OUR MISSION: using storytelling, drama and therapeutic film-therapy to change lives, challenge perceptions, tackle social exclusion and end stigma and discrimination.

esc films featured strongly as one of only 4 organisations in NI highlighted in The Baring Foundation’s recent initial mapping study of participatory arts and mental health activity in the UK. We were praised for our ‘pioneering technique’ which ‘can rebuild lives through group work and creative storytelling’. www.baringfoundation.org.uk/resource/creatively-minded/ (2020)
At the moment we are working across a range of projects with various groupings with different levels of complex needs and histories of trauma and adverse childhood experiences.

For example:

VR immersive film experience – a trauma-informed project in partnership with Housing Rights and Women’s Aid – working with a group of women who have all experienced domestic abuse and have had to seek housing while homeless. An educational project to create greater awareness in housing staff of how to better support women in the same situation.

Cancer Focus – working with their family support team to capture stories of hope for families living with cancer.

MindWise mental health charity – capturing a “day in the life” documentary film of their staff and clients.

Snakes & Ladders – a creative life rebuilding audio project with recall prisoners in HMP Maghaberry.

We are actively looking for new board members at the moment – specifically a Treasurer with experience of finance and a further board member.

It is an exciting time for the organisation – we have weathered the storms of Covid and the aftermath and are back working within the prison system after a long period of time – we are building on our new work in VR and immersive and are hoping to create a feature film adaptation of Shakespeare’s the Tempest, Prospero’s Prison to continue on from our world first feature film, Mickey B, (Macbeth adaptation) created and filmed with serving prisoners as cast in HMP Maghaberry back in 2007.
